Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a serious functional renal impairment that occurs as a complication of hepatic cirrhosis. HRS with acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI) accounts for 75% of all HRS cases. Though the understanding of HRS has evolved in recent decades, patient outcomes remain poor. The disease complexity, lack of standardized diagnostic testing, and evolving treatment paradigms for HRS-AKI are formidable challenges for clinicians caring for these critically ill patients. However, recent updates to diagnostic criteria and clinical guidelines can help the hospital care team and all healthcare providers recognize the signs of HRS-AKI so that they can accurately diagnose these patients and implement effective evidence-based treatments early in order to improve patient outcomes.
If “practice makes perfect”, MedscapeLIVE! will help you accomplish that! We have a panel of top experts to walk us through a patient case, and test us on how well we know HRS-AKI. There are no wrong answers, only teachable moments! Save your spot and join us in person, or virtually, for a CME-certified interactive and engaging learning experience!

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will:
Have increased knowledge regarding the
- Updates in clinical guidance for the management of HRS-AKI.
Have greater competence related to
- Differentiating HRS-AKI from other causes of AKI in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD).
- Selecting treatment for patients with HRS-AKI.
Demonstrate greater confidence in their ability to
- Provide team-based care to hospitalized patients with HRS-AKI.
