2024 Outstanding Service in Medicine
The recipient of this award has served as co-director of the Southern Hospital Medicine and Gulf States Courses for 23 years, contributing to the education of more than 1,000 hospitalists.
Steven Deitelzweig, MD, MMM, SFHM, holds a record of leadership in the field of hospital medicine as a prior board member of the Society of Hospital Medicine and as a representative at the AMA House of Delegates for the society.
As co-director of the long-running Southern Hospital Medicine and Gulf States Courses for 23 years, Dr. Deitelzweig has contributed to the continuing education of more than 1,000 hospitalists on numerous clinical and practice management topics.
Dr. Deitelzweig has worked closely with SHM Executive Adviser Joe Miller, prior CEO Larry Wellikson, and current CEO Eric Howell. They afforded him a leadership role on several SHM committees and task forces that positively impacted the specialty of hospital medicine, including the State of Hospital Medicine Survey. Dr. Deitelzweig also co-authored the standard-setting “Principles and Characteristics of an Effective Hospital Medicine Group,” which has been widely adopted by the specialty.
As founder of the hospital medicine department at Ochsner Health, Dr. Deitelzweig has overseen the development of a group of more than 250 physicians and advanced practice providers in a network of over 20 health care facilities.
