Smith awarded Excellence in Teaching

Dustin T. Smith, MD, is a hospitalist and section chief for inpatient medicine at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Smith, this year’s recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award, is an associate program director for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program and an associate professor of Medicine at Emory. Dr. Smith carries the clinical distinction of Emory Eminent Physician.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has been recognized for teaching excellence among a variety of learners, including students, trainees, and faculty. Dr. Smith also has received awards for service, leadership, education, and mentorship in hospital medicine.
Dr. Smith is member of the Emory Medicine Admissions Committee, director of the Learning Augmentation Plan for Emory Internal Medicine residents, and co-director for the Southern Hospital Medicine Conference. He has also served on the Society of Hospital Medicine’s (SHM) Annual Conference Committee. Dr. Smith served as course director for SHM’s annual conference in 2019. He currently serves on SHM’s Education Committee.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of the Emory School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at UCSF with distinction in the Primary Medical Education (PRIME) Program where he was awarded the G. Thomas Evans resident teaching award. His interests include medical education, evidence-based medicine, and various topics in cardiology for which he has several peer-reviewed publications as well as local, regional, and national presentations.
