Welcome to the elite Masters
SHM introduces three new Masters in Hospital Medicine.
SHM Converge 2024 kicked off Saturday morning with the welcoming of three new members to a very elite group, as SHM outgoing president Kris Rehm, MD, SFHM, honored the newest members of SHM’s 2023 Masters in Hospital Medicine program.
“This year’s three new Masters join 43 others for a total of 46 Masters in Hospital Medicine, standouts in a group of tens of thousands worldwide,” Dr. Rehm said. “This is why we consider this the Hall of Fame for hospital medicine and our society.”
Leonard Feldman, MD, FAAP, FACP, MHM, has been elected to the program in honor of his educational leadership, impressive academic portfolio and dedication to the hospitalist specialty and the society. Dr. Feldman is an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics and a practicing internal medicine and pediatrics hospitalist at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. In his time there, he helped start the Department of Medicine High-Value Care Committee, which has since been expanded to the entire Johns Hopkins Health System.
Dr. Feldman has also been an integral part in supporting SHM’s mission, including as president of SHM’s Maryland Chapter, co-creator of the Med-Peds SIG, a longtime member of SHM’s Education Committee, and a member of the Annual Conference Committee.
“The innovations he has created and partnered with others to develop—within SHM and the field of hospital medicine — will have lasting impacts,” Dr. Rehm said.
Tara Lagu, MD, MPH, MHM, has been elected a Master in Hospital Medicine in recognition of her leadership, service and innovations to advance the field of hospital medicine. Having earned her MD and master’s in public health from Yale University School of Medicine in 2002, Dr. Lagu currently serves as a full professor in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She also serves as director of the Northwestern University Center of Health Services and Outcomes Research.
Dr. Lagu has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals, including a recently published study showing that physicians often feel overwhelmed by the demands of practicing medicine and struggle to accommodate patients with disabilities. This study was featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic and NPR’s Science Friday.
“She is also an exceptional teacher, providing mentorship to numerous students, residents and fellows throughout her career,” Dr. Rehm said. “Her inspirational leadership, willingness to push boundaries and trailblazing research make Dr. Lagu a model for academic hospitalist leaders.”
Jerome C. Siy, MD, MHA, MHM, has been elected a Master in Hospital Medicine in honor of his consistent, long-standing service to patients, colleagues, SHM and the field of hospital medicine. Dr. Siy is the associate senior medical director of value-based care at HealthPartners in Bloomington, Minnesota, and is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Siy cofounded the SHM Minnesota Chapter in 2012 and served as chapter president until 2015. He has held leadership roles on numerous SHM committees, including Practice Management, Awards and Education, and he served as president of the Board of Directors from 2021-2022, overseeing SHM’s first virtual annual conference.
“He helped to guide the organization and navigate uncharted territory as SHM leadership and staff worked with our members to ensure our response and resources accurately reflected their evolving needs,” Dr. Rehm said. “Dr. Siy’s leadership has benefited SHM, our profession and our patients’ care, and we are honored to induct him as a Master in Hospital Medicine.”
